Schoharie (Schoharie County): Rowena Fairchild Hewitt died peacefully on June 23, 2010, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford, NY.
Born December 20, 1920, in Orono, Maine, Rowena was the daughter of T. Everett Fairchild and Ruth March Fairchild Dolloff. Educated at Jay, Maine, High School, she received her B.A. degree from Bates College, class of 1941. During WWII, Rowena served in the Red Cross in New Jersey, caring for and entertaining injured soldiers returning from the European Theater. After the war, she received her M.A. degree in Theater from Cornell University, where she met her husband, R. Hugh Hewitt (1922-1998). They began their married life together on September 3, 1949 in Livermore Falls, Maine.
A natural English teacher, Rowena began her career in Presque Isle, Maine. Locally, Rowena taught 2nd grade at Albany Academy for Girls, and for many years was a 9th grade English teacher at the former Hackett Junior High where she was a vocal and dedicated member of the Albany School District Teachers Union (now NYSUT).
A world traveler with her husband, Rowena was also an active member of the Slingerlands Community United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was an ardent supporter of the Reconciling Congregations movement. Rowena was a member of the Slingerlands Garden Club, a volunteer at the Albany Institute of History and Art, and a passionate defender of human rights and the Palestinian cause.
Rowena is survived by her daughters Roxanne of Philadelphia, PA, Rebecca Coughtry (Dean) of Schoharie, and Ruth Wiseman of Middleburgh; her grandchildren Jordan and Lindsay Coughtry, and Ryland and Caleb Wiseman; her nieces and nephew and grand nieces and nephews in Monmouth, Maine, Atlanta, Georgia, and South Carolina; and countless friends who enriched her life as she enriched theirs.
A memorial service will be held at Community United Methodist Church, Slingerlands, on Monday, June 28, at 3:00. For those who choose, memorial donations in Rowena’s name can be sent to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087.
The Langan Funeral Home of Schoharie and Central Bridge and the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home of Cobleskill are assisting the family with arrangements.
