Schoharie (Schoharie County): Valma M. Harrison, 87 formerly of Main Street, Schoharie died Monday, August 11, 2008 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a brief illness.
Mrs. Harrison was born September 15, 1920 in Cedarhurst, Long Island, NY a daughter of Homer Ward and Saima Marie (Nikunen) Engelhard. She had resided in Cedarhurst before moving to Schoharie in 1995 and finally, the Baptist Retirement Home in Scotia, in April of this year.
She was a 1938 graduate of Lawrence High School and later, attended Brown’s Business School in Lynbrook and finally Queens Beauty Institute. She served her country from 1943 to 1945 in the Army Air Corps as a Teletype Operator while serving in the European Theatre. Along with her career as a homemaker for her family, she also worked as a Beautician in Cedarhurst and as a caterer for several companies in Long Island before moving to Schoharie. She was a Life Member of the VFW Post #1582 of Inwood, NY and was a member of the Lutheran Church of Incarnation in Cedarhurst, LI and had also attended Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church in Central Bridge.
Val was married to George Michael Harrison on April 13, 1947 until his death on December 17, 1973.
Survivors include four children; Barbara Ellen Owen of North Babylon, LI, George Michael (Sandi) Harrison of Cocoa, Florida, Paula Marie (Danny “Boney”) Wainwright of Howes Cave, and Henry Eric (Lisa) Harrison of Garden City, LI, and one brother, Walter George (Clara) Engelhard of Live Oak, Florida. Ten grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren also survive as do several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Harrison was predeceased by one brother, Ward Harold Engelhard.
A funeral service will be held at 1 PM on Sunday, August 17th at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main St. Schoharie with Reverend Steffen A. Zehrfuhs officiating. A visitation period will be held from 11AM to 1PM prior to the services at the funeral home. Interment will be later in the Pinelawn National Cemetery, Long Island.
